We Believe Opportunity must
be Aided:
All too often, we have found that just providing a impoverished child with
the opportunity to attend school does not necessarily guarantee a brighter
future. Children living in extreme poverty face a variety of problems and
shoulder burdens far in excess of their tender ages. Numerous obstacles
remain that prevent children from reaching their fullest potential.
Without the proper supportive environment, both at home and at school,
many will face difficulties remaining in school, successfully advancing
and ultimately translating an good education into a viable career and a
pathway out of poverty.
Impoverished children face enormous burdens to learning. Child labor is an
undeniable fact of life in developing countries, often critical to a
families survival. Malnourishment plagues 50% of children in Nepal, with
bloated bellies and scaling skin a regular sight. Financial worries affect
children when there is little left to buy school books, notepads or
pencils. Girl children face additional obstacles including household
responsibilities such as collecting wood or grass, transporting water,
cooking, hand washing laundry and caring for younger siblings, and cultural
factors which discriminate against women including arranged early
marriages, menstruation pollution, and boy children preference. They also
must contend with a general environment which instills a sense of docility
and inferiority in girls, attitudes that are often only reinforced in
schools. In families with limited resources, invariably, boys will be
given the opportunity to attend school while girls are kept at home to
help with domestic chores. Families too often see education as wasted on
girls who they believe will only be married away to care for another
household.
Among other things, we believe a child must learn on a full stomach, study
without the dire worry of survival, have the necessary supplies and a
supportive enabling environment. Our Aiding Opportunity programs provides
nourishment for the body, mind and soul by continuously evaluating
critical needs of our target communities and implementing focused programs
to address them and provide the support and conducive learning environment
needed to nurture our most valuable resources – our children.
Some of our ongoing initiatives include:
FOOD FOR THE SOUL
HOPE SUPPLIES
LIFESTOCK
HOPE SPECIAL NEEDS
FUND
We reserve a special scholarship fund for students with unique educational
needs allowing us to respond with flexibility to special circumstances. We
believe in helping students achieve their dreams, whatever they may be.
Most recently, we aided a young, gifted scholar, whose family was in such
dire straits that he tried to escape to Iraq to find work. Instead, we
provided him with study materials and a prep course for the prestigious
Chartered Accountancy entrance exam. He was successful and is now enrolled
in the all-expenses paid program towards becoming a Chartered Accountant
(equivalent to a CPA).
